New pointcache stuff & other features

  1. Very nice. I like the new layout for the cache system.

One thing that was a bit unclear to me is the particle list? What exactly is that? Is that multiple particle systems on a single object?

  2. Feature request:

    Particle "tips"

Essentially the tip of a particle based hair strand could have a model, empty, group, etc as the tip of the strand. One example would be a flower as a tip of a strand of hair and the strands are animated with softbody or cloth with the flower flowing tip moving with the strand. Having control where we could place the tip somewhere on the baked path...a simple percentage could be useful. As would multiple tips. Imagine "tips" for leaves placed at 50% along the baked path and a tip for the flower at 100%.

    Discussion of editing baked paths:

My main wish is that we get the brush editing of the baked paths. But I think the topic on NLA based editing of the path would be great in addition to that. It might be possible to do things like growing hair or grass, etc.

  3. I found something interesting: I created a particle system from the default cube, then tweaked it a bit... then moved some vertices of the cube and... the unborn particles start with the cuby shape but quickly move to get the new shape. I think it would be very good to have some control on that shape-changing :)

Thanks a lot for your hard work!

Yes the list is for multiple particle systems in the same objec. Your idea of particle "tips" is already possible with the particle instance modifier, although it's not perfect yet. I coded some additions to the modifier's functionality last night so stay tuned for an update in the following days :) And yes after I get this small & cool stuff out of the way I'll start working on path editing.

Umm, not sure what you mean, can you provide a sample blend or a detailed explanation on how to recreate and what you would like to be able to do with it? :)

  5. I look forward to the updates jahka. Thanks for all your work so far. Not sure how final the interface layout is...but I think the first tab with the particle selection and particles assigned to the current object could be improved by splitting it vertically with the list on one side and the drop down options on the other. Seems like a lot of wasted space at the moment. What do you think?

  7. Did you ever see a smoking cube using your new 2.5 particle emitters? ;-) I just did see it :-)

  8. Nicholas8681: Yes the layout definately could use some work still, but the whole ui is still very young and subject to change in the future. So I'll leave it as it is for now and see if some other options come available later.

  9. Hi jahka,

Just created a short video (2 min) of the effect I found: www.nucleo-digital.com/tmp/particles-reshape.avi

Ahh, now I see the effect, thank you for the vid! Unfortunately my last commit from an hour ago destroyed your feature as it was a bug :) I have some ideas though on making keyed physics function far better than they currently do and I think your effect might be possible quite nicely with what I've go planned.

  11. lol! I was guessing that could possibly be a bug! I'll be waiting for the even-nicer feature ;)
